Still Waters Run Deep: A Solo Exhibition by Cameron Lewis

Drummond Studio Gallery, Charleston, SC
Charleston's Drummond Studio Gallery presents Still Waters Run Deep, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Cameron Lewis that invites viewers beneath the surface of identity, memory, and quiet strength. Join us February 24th for an evening viewing of this intimate collection exploring what remains unseen: the depths that exist within people, stories, and the artist's own journey of self-discovery.

The Calm That Holds Depth"The water may look calm, but its quiet holds depth: memory, struggle, love, and reflection," Lewis explains. This exhibition emerges from that stillness, from the understanding that silence carries its own power, that peace is often hard-earned, and that true depth rarely reveals itself at first glance.

Through Lewis's distinctive visual language woven with stripes, cherry blossoms, and kanji, Still Waters Run Deep becomes a meditation on contradictions. Strength and vulnerability exist side by side. Greatness intertwines with imperfection. Even legends live alongside their flaws.

Non-Traditional Meets TraditionalThe collection revisits the figures who have shaped Lewis's artistic vision, both real and imagined. From cultural icons to the resilient spirits found in anime heroes, to the contemplative beauty embedded in Japanese aesthetic philosophy, each subject carries their own contradictions and complexities. These portraits and scenes look beyond fame, image, and memory to reveal what exists underneath: the human truth beneath the surface.Growing up in the South, Lewis learned to find beauty in the broken and calm within chaos. This exhibition blends that reality with a deep reverence for Japanese culture, creating a singular visual language where cultural, spiritual, and personal influences converge into expressions of stillness and depth.

A Self-Taught VisionAs a self-taught artist, Lewis has developed an approach unbounded by academic convention, one that bridges Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions with authenticity and intention. The recurring motifs throughout this body of work aren't decorative choices but carefully considered symbols that honor their origins while forging something distinctly personal.

Still Waters Run Deep offers viewers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and recognize that what appears calm on the surface often holds profound complexity beneath. Join us February 24th to experience Cameron Lewis's intimate visual journey through the layers that make us who we are.
