Against the Grain: A Solo Exhibition by Michelle Washington

Drummond Studio Gallery is proud to present Against the Grain, a solo exhibition by Michelle Washington, on view May 22nd through June 5th during Piccolo Spoleto. This exhibition examines the brutal legacy of rice plantations in the Carolinas and the foundational role they played in shaping the American South. Through large-scale abstract paintings, symbolic imagery, and immersive installation, Washington confronts the tension between abundance and exploitation, inviting audiences to reflect on inheritance, endurance, and the true cost of cultivation in the American landscape.

Programming includes an opening reception on Friday, a wine tasting with Fermented Vines, an artist talk with Michelle Washington, and three nights of live performance featuring Ann Caldwell, Ron Daise, and The Mahoganee Xperience.
