Curatorial Statement

Underdog marks the one year anniversary of Drummond Studio Gallery, bringing together many of the artists whose work, presence, and participation helped shape its first year.

An underdog often begins with less: fewer resources, fewer advantages, and little expectation of success. Yet we are drawn to those who refuse to let those conditions define what is possible. Their stories are shaped by persistence, resilience, and the determination to continue when the odds suggest otherwise. In that sense, the underdog reveals something about how we decide who is expected to succeed and who is expected to be overlooked.

Throughout the exhibition, a collection of newspaper and magazine articles documents another part of this story: the moment the work began to be seen. Artists, exhibitions, and the gallery itself became part of the cultural conversation. What began with limited expectations developed into a presence that could no longer be easily overlooked.

These articles are more than documentation. They mark a shift.

Underdog celebrates the artists who helped create that shift and the community that gathered around them. It reflects on what can emerge when artists are given space, when communities show up, and when those who begin with less create something impossible to ignore.

One year later, Drummond Studio Gallery has established itself as a space for artists and ideas that might not otherwise have been given the room to exist. The underdog story is no longer only about overcoming the odds. It is about what becomes possible when you create your own space and invite others into it.

What does being an underdog mean to you?
